For the second year in a row, our DeVos-Blum Family YMCA was proud to send a group of young athletes to San Juan, Puerto Rico to participate in a basketball game against other Y athletes. The trip was led by YMCA of South Palm Beach County Board of Trustee member and volunteer Coach, Dan Huck. Although the primary purpose of the trip was to play basketball, it also served to introduce the boys to new experiences, as well as provide an opportunity for cultural immersion and community support, which aligns perfectly with the Y's mission.

Despite facing challenges like power outages at the YMCA where they practiced, our Y's athletes had an enriching experience. They scrimmaged with local kids, bonded with the community, and won an exciting match against a talented YMCA team. Additionally, the boys had a chance to explore the streets of Old San Juan and learn more about Puerto Rican history.

A highlight was the post-game bonding, where our Y’s players connected with the opposing team using translator apps, fostering cross-cultural friendships. Despite language barriers, they bonded over their shared love for the game and the YMCA's values.

"It is my hope that the boys will use some of these moments to strengthen their character. Someday, one of them will remember this trip and use that moment to power through a difficult situation, help their community or appreciate what they have available to them here at home," states Dan.

Our Y is very grateful for Dan's passion and his leadership of this initiative, and for the support from generous donors who helped facilitate this unique trip, making such transformative experiences possible for our Y's youth.
